Digital course app gives patients control over their own anticoagulation treatment

Noklus (Norwegian Quality Improvement of Laboratory Examinations) has since 2008 offered quality-assured training in self-management of anticoagulation therapy, in collaboration with Norwegian health trusts. Together with Youwell, Noklus has digitalised the training programme, aiming for secure communication between patient and clinician and a more sustainable offering.

The challenge

Norwegian studies have shown that self-management of anticoagulation therapy leads to better treatment quality and improved quality of life compared with conventional treatment. At the same time, the training programme, which has been running since 2008, relied on paper-based forms and manual communication between patient and laboratory adviser. Participants' life situations - with work, family, and long travel distances - could make it difficult to complete the training, and a secure, user-friendly logging tool was essential for safe communication between patient and clinician.

How Youwell addressed the challenge

Youwell and Noklus have developed a digital reporting and course solution, integrated into the Youwell platform. The patient logs INR measurements and medication dosage, can set a target INR level, and sees progress in both graph and table format. The system has threshold values and automatic flagging to the clinician when needed. Course material is gathered into digital modules, and communication with the laboratory adviser happens securely via chat in the app - making the training more flexible for participants with work, family, or long travel distances.
